Academy Status January 2011

Academy Status

South Wilts Grammar School converted to a new style Academy, as an outstanding school, on 1st January 2011. Nothing changes; we remain selective, the school's name stays the same, the ethos, values and the priorities that result in this being an outstanding school will continue.

The conversion to Academy Status will bring with it greater freedoms and autonomy in many areas. We are now funded directly from central government and, along with gaining additional funding streams the school will have greater freedom in deciding how best to allocate these resources. This provides the school with greater security, as we move into an austere future.

The new freedoms will allow us to provide the best educational experience possible for our students. We will continue to work with schools in our local community, both with the Wessex Partnership and primary schools. Our outreach work in mathematics has involved working with five different primary schools and over 100 pupils. In science, over 600 pupils have come into South Wilts over the course of the year to work in our laboratories on a wider range of activities.

This is a step, which gives the school increased freedom to continue to provide the very best learning opportunities for all of our students.
