Music Department Newsletter – April 2008

Visit to Salisbury College

The year 11 girls visited a recording studio at Wiltshire College in February. They saw the layout of the studios and heard music recorded by the college students using multi-tracking. We are visiting again in April and hope to sample vocal techniques used by recording artists.

Sarum College Concert

On February 29th A Cappella gave a lunch-time concert at Sarum College. The choir sang a variety of music, which was warmly received by the audience. Stephanie Murchison played a beautiful clarinet solo and Frances Copp (voice) and Tori Clarke (violin) gave a very moving performance of an aria from Bach's St. Matthew's Passion. We were made very welcome and all thoroughly enjoyed the experience, especially of having the chance to sing in such a wonderful acoustic.

Instrumental Groups' Concert

In March the school's instrumental groups played to a full audience in the hall. Training Orchestra gave a lovely, energetic performance of Vivaldi's Winter, with the solo parts arranged for saxophones played very well by Molly Burlingham, Katie Collins and Emma Francis. They also played the well-known Flower Duet by Delibes, this time with sixth formers Alice Hamlin and Stephanie Murchison as soloists. Chamber Orchestra gave accomplished performances of Walton's Henry V and Vivaldi's Spring with a dazzling solo from Ruth Scott on the violin. Senior Orchestra played a variety of music and provided another opportunity for leaving sixth formers to play solos with orchestral accompaniment, including an assured and passionate rendition of Wieniawski's Legend from Tori Clarke on violin, a beautiful performance of Gluck's  Dance of the Blessed Spirits from Anna Taylor and Hannah Reid's virtuosic playing of Weber's Clarinet Concertino. We also heard from the Guitar Ensemble, joined by vocalists Bethany Woolgrove and Alexandra Puzdrowski, performing two very effective numbers. It was very pleasing to hear the smaller groups which were led by students and reached such a high standard, including a string quartet, Brass Ensemble, Clarinet Quartet, Saxophone Quartet and a mixed chamber group. Jenni Ridley gave us a beautiful harp solo. Wind Band played music from Pocahontas  and  brought the evening to a close with a really spirited and enjoyable performance of music from Grease. We are very grateful to all the music staff and to our PGCE student, Richard Bristow, who encourage and guide the students with such expertise and enthusiasm.
