On 19 September, South Wilts Grammar School welcomed guests to their 96th speech day event in the magnificent Salisbury Cathedral. It was an opportunity to celebrate student achievements and thank staff for their contribution and commitment.
Guest speaker and alumna, Kiri Cashell, shared her experiences of South Wilts Grammar School and her career leading up to her role as a BBC producer and director. Reflecting on her time at South Wilts Grammar School, Kiri recalled being an ‘average SWGS student.’ Kiri’s passion was always for wildlife and the outdoors and, after graduating from Cardiff with a degree in marine science, Kiri became a runner on Autumn Watch. Through hard work, curiosity and the ability to talk to, and learn from, lots of people around her, Kiri is now producer and director of Planet Earth III. Kiri’s advice to students is to follow their passion, do not be afraid to fail, have integrity and a strong moral compass, and be a ‘good egg’.
Dr Smith, Headteacher at South Wilts Grammar School said, “As we embark on the year ahead, as I begin my headship of this school, I see a school full of ambition and hope. The exam results this year were incredible. Our GCSE results were excellent: 71% of all grades awarded were grades 7 to 9, with 46% graded 8 to 9. At A Level, results were also very strong, with 69% of grades being A* to B. Success is measured in so many ways and true success lies in nurturing well rounded individuals who are prepared not just for exams, but also for life.
The opportunities at South Wilts Grammar School are plentiful, the enthusiasm infectious and the energy boundless. The consequence is that we have a school filled with students whose contributions to the wonderful culture of the school make it the success it is. This is a place where success breeds success, where inspiration is seen in every corner.
