Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) is one of our golden threads and is well embedded in school culture. At SWGS, we are committed to creating a community where everyone feels valued, respected and able to thrive. EDI is central to our ethos and underpins our policies, curriculum and daily practice.
We believe that diversity enriches our school community and prepares students to live and work successfully in a modern, multicultural society. We are committed to ensuring that every member of our community is treated fairly and with dignity, regardless of background, identity or personal circumstance.
Our vision is to build a school community that truly values equality, celebrates diversity and ensures inclusion and fairness.
SWGS EDI Framework: 4 C's
Curriculum
Aim: To diversify and inclusify taught and extra-curricular to ensure that all students reach their full potential whilst at SWGS.
What does this look like at SWGS?: EDI Department audits to review inclusivity of the curriculum, raising awareness, and addressing protected characteristics.
Community
Aim: To celebrate our diverse SWGS community and provide a safe space for discussion and education through the development of clubs, and activities that reflect all members of the SWGS community.
What does this look like at SWGS?: Events that foster understanding, celebrate diversity, and raise awareness of different cultures, social issues, and other aspects of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
For example:
Sixth Form Multi-Cultural Event, Black History Month, Diwali, Year 10 EDI Day, Odd Socks Day, Where it Green Day, Pride, Ramadan
Primary outreach: we prioritise access to local schools, using knowledge of their school context, offering Science, Maths, Music and Drama (bi-annually in line with whole school performance).
Culture
Aim: To ensure that we have clear expectations of all members of the SWGS community in relation to all matters relating to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. To ensure that we have robust/clear systems in place to support, manage and respond to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Framework and Vision: Developed with trustees to set clear EDI expectations
Ongoing Equality Impact Assessments (EQIAs).
Career Pathways
Aim: To recruit and retain staff from all backgrounds and attract students from all backgrounds to join our school community.

High staff retention and diverse staff community
Partnerships: Free 11+ preparation for eligible students through Atom Learning and Frog
Our EDI Work - A Summary
1. Curriculum Embedding: Majority of departments incorporate EDI topics into teaching, with plans for areas of development already in progress.
2. Inclusive Events and Outreach: Regular celebration of cultural and identity-based events (e.g., Black History Month, Pride) and targeted outreach to local primary schools prioritising underprivileged areas.
3. Policy and Practice: Comprehensive EDI framework, regular Equality Impact Assessments (EQIAs), and updated policies reflecting best practices.
4. Community Engagement: We have 78 Student EDI Ambassadors. We also have student and parent access to resources like Atom Learning and Frog for equitable academic preparation and free familiarisation test for all.
Recent EDI Activities
Recent EDI activities include:
- EAL club for KS4/5 students who need additional support
- 6th form multicultural day – cultural event with dancing, singing, food, crafts, representing Philippines, Ukraine, Poland, Nepal, India, Scandinavia, Switzerland.
- EDI student walk to consider accessibility, green space, inclusion (cultural and general), mental health
- EQIAs for statutory policies
- EDI survey for all students
- EDI focus groups
- Specialist foods sold in the canteen during Black History Month and over the period of Diwali.
- Assemblies focussing on a range of aspects of EDI
