On Saturday the 13th May, we (the Head Student Team) were invited to attend the inauguration of Cllr Atiqul Hoque as mayor. It was a fascinating ceremony held in St Thomas’ Church that touched on some of the duties of mayor, the intentions of Mayor Hoque going forward and even some funny experiences Cllr Tom Corbin had during his term. The ceremony was based on tradition, the event holding great historical significance as Mayor Hoque became the 762nd Mayor. Following the ceremony, we joined the procession to the Guild Hall before attending the reception. There was a short stop in the Market Square where it was announced that there was a new mayor and locals were able to watch. The reception itself was a lovely event, where we were able to meet interesting people and understand their contributions to the local area, looking for any useful connections to the school or support we could provide. The food was amazing, a spread of lots of Bangladeshi snacks, and the reception introduced the charities the Mayor Hoque will be supporting. At the end of the event, we spoke to the mayor himself about his new campaigns and were incredibly grateful to have been invited as Mayor Hoque made history as the first Bangladeshi, Muslim Mayor of Salisbury.
