A Level Environmental Science

Environmental Science is a multidisciplinary subject taught by staff from within the science and geography departments.

 

What Does the Course Involve?

Environmental Science is one of the most relevant and exciting subjects of our time, exploring the complex relationship between people and the planet. If you are curious about climate change, renewable energy, biodiversity, food production, sustainability, and the future of our environment, this course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to understand and address some of the world’s greatest challenges.

As a multidisciplinary subject, Environmental Science combines elements of biology, chemistry, geography, physics, economics, and politics. You will investigate how Earth’s systems work, how life has evolved and shaped the environment, and how human activities continue to influence the natural world.

Students are required to complete a combination of fieldwork and laboratory-based investigations, including a minimum of two days of fieldwork and twelve practical laboratory activities. In addition, a range of visits to environmental organisations and industry partners enriches the curriculum, providing valuable insight into how environmental science is applied beyond the classroom and highlighting potential career pathways within the sector.

How Will You Learn?

Much of the course is taught but students will also carry out a variety of practical tasks, fieldwork, independent research and presentations. Students’ independent study will focus on consolidation of the work covered through a range of review, extension and preparation tasks set by staff.

What exams and coursework are involved?

The 2-year linear A Level course is assessed in two external papers consisting of multiple choice, short answer and extended 9– and 25-mark written answers.

  • Paper 1 – 50% weighting assessing knowledge and understanding of the physical environment, energy resources, pollution, and research methods.
  • Paper 2 – 50% weighting assessing knowledge and understanding of the living environment, biological resources, sustainability, and research methods.

Assessment of the knowledge and understanding of the practical skills will be by written exams only. Overall, at least 15% of the marks for A-level Environmental Science qualification will rely on the application of practical skills and 10% will assess mathematical skills.
