Library
The SWGS library is a busy and vibrant space at the heart of the school community. It offers a spacious and welcoming environment for our students to study, research and read and is open from 8.15 am to 4.15 pm, Monday to Friday. There is a variety of study seating and comfortable chairs for reading. During lesson times the library is a Sixth Form study space. Before and after school and during breaks and lunchtime the library is open to the whole school community.
We stock over 12,000 fiction and non-fiction titles to support both the curriculum and recreational reading. As well as books the library has a photocopier, a number of networked computers, careers resources, magazines, periodicals and DVDs. The Accessit library system can be accessed by students and staff throughout the school.
The library is a hub of bookish activity, with frequently changing displays promoting everything from the latest popular fiction to pertinent themes like Women’s History Month and Mental Health Week. Embracing the school’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) vision is an important part of our work in the library, and we work hard to make the collection as inclusive as possible. Students are encouraged to get involved, sharing their love of books by writing SWGS Recommends reviews or by volunteering: this year over 50 students have helped with the smooth running of the Library as student librarians or volunteers.
The Library’s lunchtime clubs include reading groups, chess and board games clubs. We run a variety of events through the year including World Book Day and the Salisbury School Book Awards. The latest book news is shared on Accessit, in regular newsletters and via posts on the school’s social media channels. Students can also browse Accessit or the Library’s ‘What to Read Next’ folders for genre, EDI and each department’s Wider Reading lists.
Librarians Ms F Noble and Mrs E Hampshire (add link to library@ email) are available to offer support and guidance to all students and staff in using the Library.
Good quality book donations of books suitable for readers aged 11-16 are always welcome.
