Our psychology students attended Brain Day at Godolphin School which was led by Dr Guy Sutton from Medical Biology Interactive. Students received lectures on many interesting subjects, some of which extended their understanding of content that they cover at A Level.
Dr Sutton shared the most up-to-date research on topics such as consciousness after death, the damaged and the working brain, brain plasticity, the neonatal brain, epigenetics, climate change and the brain, the criminal brain and many more. There was also a brain dissection demonstration and the students handled some of the subcortical structures that we learn about in lessons, including the hippocampus, corpus callosum and the pineal gland. Our students were thoroughly engaged in all areas and this experience has really developed their knowledge and understanding in areas related to the topics they wish to pursue at university.
We finished by discussing the future of brain research, including cerebral organoids (growing brains in the lab using reverse engineering) and how computers will interface with the brain within our lifetime.
