Environmental Science
A Level
Environmental Science is a multidisciplinary subject taught by staff from within the science and geography departments.
Why study environmental science?
Environmental Science is a multi-disciplinary course and is suitable for students who have a keen interest in the sustainability of our planet. You will learn about the physical environment of the Earth, how the conditions for life developed and how the presence of life has brought about environmental change. You will gain an understanding of the energy requirements of our society and the processes through which demands are met, the problems this causes and the technologies emerging to combat these. You will also learn about agriculture from environmental, economic, social and political stand points. Field work, individual research and practical sampling methods are key aspects of this specification.
Students must undertake fieldwork which meets the minimum requirement of 4 days of fieldwork for A-level. If a mixture of fieldwork and laboratory-based activities is chosen then the equivalent minimum requirement would be 2 days of fieldwork plus 12 laboratory-based activities.
Year 12 & 13 AQA examination outline
The linear A Level course is assessed in two external papers consisting of multiple choice, short answer and extended 9 and 25-mark written answers.
Assessment of the knowledge and understanding of the practical skills will be by written exams only. Overall, at least 15% of the marks for A-level Environmental Science qualification will rely on the application of practical skills. At least 10% of the total marks will rely on application of mathematical skills.

Grade 6 in a Science and Maths. The Combined Science requirement is 66.
Where will it take you?
The field of Environmental Science is growing at an increasing rate and studying this subject could open the door to many career opportunities within government, local authorities, environment and conservation agencies. Specific roles include environmental engineer, minerals surveyor, sustainability consultant, water quality scientist and recycling officer. This names only a small number from an ever-growing list.
