Mathematics

Key Stage 3

Year 7

Students extend their range of mental and written calculation strategies and use efficient procedures to calculate with integers, fractions, decimals and percentages. They undertake activities that show how algebra, as an extension of number using symbols, gives precise form to mathematical relationships, formulae and calculations. They use angle facts and properties of two and three-dimensional shapes in constructions and calculations. In statistical work Students construct and interpret data in tabular and diagrammatic representations, as well as calculating averages and spread of data. In tackling investigative work Students select and combine known facts and problem solving strategies to reach solutions to real-life problems.

Year 8

In Year 8, students build further upon their knowledge of number, measures, algebra, shape and space, and data handling through activities that provide frequent opportunities for students to discuss their work, to develop reasoning and understanding, and to explain their strategies.  Students learn to solve a range of numerical problems, in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts, including those involving fractions and percentages, and thoroughly explore the concepts of direct and inverse proportion.  They use algebraic notation to describe patterns and sequences, and solve equations, use formulae and construct graphs including quadratic graphs.  Students calculate lengths, areas and volumes of two- and three-dimensional shapes, and use circle formulae.  In statistical work they use increasingly sophisticated diagrammatic representations. There are opportunities for the students to develop their problem solving skills by addressing open-ended tasks.

Year 9

In Year 9, students build upon their knowledge of number, measures, algebra, shape and space, and data handling.
Students learn to solve accurately a range of numerical problems, including those involving ratio and percentage and surd form.  They develop the use of algebraic notation through describing increasingly complex number patterns and sequences and through using formulae and equations in a variety of contexts.  Students calculate lengths, areas and volumes of two- and three-dimensional shapes, including using Pythagoras’ Theorem & trigonometry.  In statistical work they use appropriate diagrammatic representation including Venn diagrams as well as calculating averages and spread of data to make inferences.  Students also tackle extended pieces of investigative and problem solving work which provide opportunities to develop reasoning and understanding, and to explain their strategies and solutions.

Key Stage 4 (GCSE)

All students study mathematics to GCSE. Over the two years, students are prepared for higher level papers at a pace appropriate to them.

Year 10 and Year 11 (AQA)

The course is taught holistically throughout the two years with inbuilt opportunities to revisit prior learning and extend knowledge and skills from a firm foundation. In each year, students will study topics from all strands and will apply their skills, knowledge and understanding in a variety of real-life contexts and in solving problems. GCSE Mathematics requires students to:

  • Develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts, including: Number, Algebra, Geometry, Measures, Probability, Statistics
  • Use their knowledge and understanding to make connections between mathematical concepts
  • Apply the functional elements of mathematics in everyday and real-life situations.

It also gives students the opportunity to develop their ability to:

  • acquire and use problem-solving strategies
  • select and apply mathematical techniques and methods in mathematical, everyday and real-world situations
  • reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences and draw conclusions
  • interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context.

Given the importance of mathematics, all students will continue its study to GCSE level.  The most able of our students will also have the opportunity to prepare for a second qualification, the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics.
