It was a privilege to welcome Major General James Cowan, CEO of The HALO Trust, to SWGS this morning. Major General Cowan’s lecture gave sixth formers a fascinating insight into the challenges of a world affected by conflict, food security, migration and climate change.
HALO is the world’s largest NGO protecting lives and restoring livelihoods for people affected by conflict. It was founded in 1988 in Afghanistan and now employs 13,000 staff in 30 countries.
Major General Cowan CBE DSO was a professional soldier for 30 years, serving in Northern Ireland, Germany, Africa, Iraq and Afghanistan. Since 2015, he has led The HALO Trust, growing the charity from it roots in landmine clearance to become the major international NGO it is today.
