Student leaders from Years 9 to 11 visited the House of Lords and Churchill War Rooms on Tuesday so they could see democracy in action. Students had the opportunity to ask six peers, including Lord Hampton, Lord McNichol and Baroness Ritchie of Downpatrick, about their role in the House of Lords – discussions ranged from how they became a member of the house and how legislation becomes passed to their individual specialities.
Our students were given a tour of the House of Lords, following the route taken by the monarch at the State Opening of Parliament, and spent time in Westminster Hall where the Queen lay in state before her funeral. The group walked down to Downing Street before exploring the Churchill War Rooms to see the impact of Winston Churchill’s leadership on politics and the war.
It was a fantastic opportunity to see how the British democratic system works and understand the importance of our own school parliament.
