PSHE & Citizenship
Personal and Social Development combines two subjects: PSHE and Citizenship. They are two different but related subjects that are taught together at SWGS. The PSHE course encompasses a wide range of topics that focus on helping each individual student grow into a well-rounded, independent, and informed citizen in the community.

What is PSHE?
PSHE stands for Personal, Social and Health Education. Throughout this area students focus on themselves and how achieve their potential.
The PSHE curriculum reflects the needs and interests of SWGS students and, therefore, is subject to change. It is divided into three core themes which are followed through in KS3, KS4 and KS5:
- Health and Wellbeing
- Relationships
- Living in the Wider World
What is Citizenship?
The Citizenship content of the course teaches students about issues that affect society locally, nationally and globally. Students will learn the details of current, topical issues and how to get involved in making a change with regards to problems they feel strongly about. There is an underlying theme which helps students understand and respond to the current issues facing the world, confident in their understanding of British values.
How often is it taught?
Year 7: One hour per week
Year 8: One hour per week
Year 9: One hour per week
Year 10: Three hours per fortnight
Year 11: Three hours per fortnight
Year 12 & 13: One hour per fortnight
RSHE Policy
Relationship, sex, and health education (RSHE) is statutory which means the school must provide RSHE to all students. A copy of the schools RSE policy can be found here. It is reviewed annually and is approved by the Education and Experience Committee.
Other Information
Throughout their PSHE lessons at South Wilts, students will be given opportunities to find out more through additional talks, activities and more. This can include, but is not limited to the following:
- National Mock Trial competition (KS3)
- UK Youth Parliament and the Wiltshire Assembly of Youth
- Mock interviews (KS4)
- Study skills sessions with external providers
- Visit/talk from the lead nurse at Wiltshire Sexual Health
